Our Cattle

George Washington of Lovefield (affectionately known as GW on the farm) is our current herd sire. He is a dun bull that came from Appomattox, VA. He is entering his second season of breeding, and we hope to use him for one more season to grow the herd before bringing in a replacement.

Benjamin Franklin of Lovefield (aka Frank) is our herd sire in waiting. He is a yellow bull calf born in 2023 that we got right here in Rockbridge County. Yellow is an appealing color for a bull for two reasons–lighter color should make him less heat stressed in the summer and yellow sires should be able to produce any colored calf depending on the dam. We look forward to seeing him mature.

Blackberry is one of our first two cows. She is our largest framed cow, hopefully adding more of that fine Highland beef to her calves. She is also the steadiest temperament of all of our cows–rock solid! She is about eight years old and we hope to have many more years with her.

Maple is the other of our first two cows. She is our Goldilocks – middle sized frame, middle sized personality. She is the beautiful deep red traditional of highlands, will sometimes tolerate petting, and is very friendly. She is about eight years old and we hope to have many more years with her.

Marigold is a friendly yellow cow with a smaller frame. She is the first to come running for treats, loves to have her head and sides rubbed, and sometimes thinks she is too small and ready to be a lap cow. She is about six and we are looking forward to her first calf with us!

Petunia is new to us as of fall 2024! She is a two year old registered white Galloway with red tips. We hope that she becomes an anchor of our summer-hardy/winter-hardy herd and are looking forward to her first Highland-Galloway calf next year.

Rose is also new to us as of fall 2024. She is a three year old registered red Galloway cow who had a beautiful strongly marked white calf last year. She has a black muzzle ring similar to the “Bus Dubh” muzzle ring in Highland cattle.

Bess is our first cow, and the only one not named after a plant. As our first, we went with a classic cow name. She is a sturdy Angus girl who rounds out range of Scottish breed cattle, and has had multiple beautiful calves for us.
